Comments: Dear Mr. Jan Popiel! I am glad to visit POPEL`s Webside. There I found two Popels: Stepan and Bohdan. They are my father`s cousines.Their parents were Mykhaylo Popel (1873-1912) and Olga Kalynska (1873-1954). Anton Popel (29.01.1844-9.08.1921) and Frantishka Samagalska (4.05.1848-25.05.1928) were parents of Mykhaylo Popel and Anton Popel (1877 - 1961) - m grandfather. So far as I know the parents of Anton Popel (the first one) were Matvij (Matij) Popel and Fevronia Kobyljanska and the parents of Matvij were Teodor Popel de Kiszczak and Anastazia Kopystynska. Maybe the spelling of the mentioned surnames is incorect but I have them only in Ukrainian. The parents of Anton (my granfather) and Mykhaylo Popel were buried in Tustanovychi (now part of the town Boryslav near Drogobych) and the tomb exists now. Bohdan Popel besides of his brother Stepan had other brothers: Marian (1910-1968) - bank clark in N.Y., Illiarij (lived in the Chech Republic) and sister Daria (1899-1990 in Toronto, Canada). The son of Marian Popel - Yurij (George) Popel, M.D. works in ye Center of Delaware (tel. (302) 656-8867) and the son of Bohdan - Orest Popel is an attorney in Chicago. Soon after, his brother went back to poland to live with his father. my grandfather never heard from him again. frank popiel died in 1986 at the age of 89. my grandfather told me, when i was a child, his family was related to royalty in poland and until i discovered your web site and read about the popiel history i thought he was only telling tales. what a surprise! |

Comments: My grandmother was Aniela Popiel. They lived in "Koroloowka", it was the "Tarnopoliska Oblast" near Borszczow. After World War II they were "expartiated" to Zielona Gora in Poland. She married Frank Hardyk. Frank was a member of "Organizaji Sokolow", he spend at least seven years in USA (including Alaska). I know that my grandma parents lived in Vienna. I am particularly interested in those members of the clan who may have their name as a variation of one of the more historic names of the clan ( i.e., Popiel as a variation of Popielarski or Popieluscko (spelling?). I am curious about when and where names may have or have not been changed by a previous generation, whether voluntarily or invoulntarily (possibly as the result of a migration and related government paperwork) as was done in the great immigration in NY in the early 20th century. |

Comments: Great Site! Very interested about the Popiel background. My Grandfather's name was Leon Popiel, who immigrated to the U.S. (Detroit Area) around 1900. He was killed by a street car in the 1930's in Detroit. I don't know too much about the Popiel side ecause Leon was killed when my father was young. I believe Leon's family lived in Lvov. |

Comments: My grandmother emigrated to america in 1912 and settled in Rhode Island, where my father Frank Popiel was born in 1920. My grandfathers name was Stephen Popiel.
