Popiel Makriel (1825-1900), Greek Orthodox Church activist, the author of the schoolbooks, in 1865-66 the publisher and the editor of the newspaper "Niedielia". As a priest, he moved together with other Moscofiles to Chelm region, where he was an activist of the Chelm Church Council and from 1871 he became an administrator of the Chelm Eparchy. He prepared and directed local Eastern Rite Catholics change to Russian Orthodox Church.. In 1875 he became the Orthodox Lublin Eparch, later Podole and Polock and Witebsk. Since 1889 a member of the World Council.
